Gardens of Kyresoo FAQ - The Player and Society Who owns the seeds I produce? Gardens Kyresoo is intended to be community exploration of the genetic space of the Kyresoo plants. One of the “rules of the game” in Kyresoo is that when you post your flowers up on your website, you are giving people permission to pick seeds and use them in their own gardens or LabTray. This is probably best legally expressed by some sort of “Creative Commons” license, and I guess I will have to formalize that a bit more in the near future. Do I get any credit for my contributions to Kyresoo? The game rule in Kyresoo that anyone can always pick seed from your flowers and use them in their garden or their lab. Balanced with that, is that you should always give others credit for the part they played in developing your seeds. This is easily done. Each seed contains a “Pedigree History” listing who did what to each seed. This history is viewable with the seedlog tool. So, to stay within the rules of the game, you should never attempt to alter this log to claim false credit. What is the Academy of the Gardening Arts? The Academy of the Gardening Arts in Kyresoo is the ruling body in the great Academy Tree. Its sets the formal rules that Stewards follow in their gardens. It permits members to register seeds with Academy, so their Pedigree logs are preserved in case of a dispute. At a future date, the Academy will also organize the “Academy Awards”, an intentionally subjective guide to Kyresoo’s most beautiful gardens. The Crystal Spiders of the Academy also patrol the branches of the great tree, looking for mutant or dead leaves. How do I join the Academy of the Gardening Arts? There are two routes to becoming Members of the Academy, wealth and popularity. Stewards who supply sufficient resources to the Academy (represented by the Steward’s Player subscribing to “World of Kyresoo”) become Patrons of the Academy of the Gardening Arts. This status gives them six votes in the Member elections. A Steward may be elected to Membership by obtaining six votes in the annual elections, which must come from at least three different Academy Patrons. Thus any Steward of talent or at least popularity can become a member regardless of wealth. (I’m expecting some very good players to come from the ranks of those too young to have a credit card, and I wanted a mechanism to allow those to become members). The board of the Academy (essentially me at the moment) has the power to grant permanent Membership to prominent Stewards, but how often this will be used is hard to say. What are the Academy Awards? Members of the Academy will be able to vote in the Academy awards to point other players to beautiful gardens. This will be a very subjective process, think more Amazon book recommendations than the Oscars. Subjective search problems, like “find me something I think is beautiful” are a long time interest of mine. I have some ideas about how to go about that, but it could be a while before it makes it into Kyresoo.
