FAQ - More on the game
When will Gardens of Kyresoo be released?
Gardens of Kyresoo is currently (April 06) in
development. The flower growing code is complete and usable, but not
the “world” related portions like travel around the Academy Tree and
planting gardens. My rough target is to have all those elements in
place by the end of the year (Dec 06). But, in my view, online games
are never “complete”, they keep growing until people lose interest,
then they die off. This game is on ongoing exploration of the
possible moments of beauty in a particular world. In that sense, the
game will never be complete. See “To be Continued” in the
Documentation section for more on the future of Kyresoo.
What is the “Tech Demo”?
.The flower growing code in Gardens of Kyresoo is
complete. It now needs interested people to test the range of
flowers the code can produce. There isn't any "game" code at
present, just tools for modifying genes to produce new flowers. The
tools themselves are rather technical in nature. The game world
itself will provide more intuitive access to new flowers.
What do you mean by a Roleplay game?
“Roleplay” means different things to different people.
A couple of senses are clear in my mind. One is that of taking on a
different Persona from your everyday one. You might be shy in the
everyday world, but enjoy roleplaying a gregarious person in on
online world. That kind of roleplay is not the focus of Kyresoo. The
second sense of “roleplay” is taking on the viewpoint of the
inhabitant of another world.
That second sense of roleplay is to some degree
mandatory in Kyresoo. Your viewpoint is constrained by the code to
be a somewhat alien one. Light in Kyresoo is a translation of the
life energy of the plants, and doesn’t quite behave like light in
the familiar world. Stewards tend to stick to the formal pathways in
their gardens, and do things in their own proper time, according to
the Beat. Their sense of time is quite different from ours. For them
the whole life of a flower passes in what seems like minutes, so
they see gardens as place of dynamic movement, not of static
display. I expect some people will find the slow, formal beat of the
Kyresoo world frustrating rather than restful. But I hope enough
people will enjoy the Steward viewpoint to make the world a success.
If it’s a roleplay game, do I have to talk funny?
Hehe, no. In fact, the “in world” chat function isn’t
implemented yet, and won’t be for a good while. When it is, I’m
thinking there will be some visible separation between discussions
“within” the Kyresoo world, and those that concern the everyday
familiar world. But beyond that, you are welcome to keep your
everyday persona in this new world. There may be some people who
will want to take on a game persona matching their perception of the
Steward culture. I don’t know too much about that culture yet,
except that it is rather formal and concerned with beauty, and
definitely not combative or hasty. Perhaps when the world is built,
some explorers can investigate that aspect further.
